Τελικά η ζωή παίζει περίεργα παιχνίδια. Ο άνθρωπος που πλήγωσε αφάνταστα τον εγωισμό των Βραζιλιάνων ποδοσφαιριστών, εκείνος που αμφισβητεί τα πρωτεία του Πελέ, αναγκάζεται να βρει «άσυλο» στην χώρα του καφέ προκειμένου να σώσει την ζωή του. Ο λόγος για τον Ντιέγκο Αρμάντο Μαραντόνα, ο οποίος για μία ακόμη φορά θα προσπαθήσει να απεξαρτηθεί από τα ναρκωτικά.

Ο καλύτερος ποδοσφαιριστής όλων των εποχών (σύμφωνα με το φίλαθλο ποδοσφαιρικό κοινό) δεν κατάφερε να ξεπεράσει τον σκόπελο της εξάρτησης από τα ναρκωτικά με την προσπάθεια που κατέβαλε στην Κούβα και έτσι έναν χρόνο μετά έδωσε μάχη για την ζωή του στην Αργεντινή. Ο πάλαι ποτέ σούπερ σταρ του Παγκοσμίου ποδοσφαίρου στρέφεται πλέον στο κέντρο απεξάρτησης της Βραζιλίας, που μοιάζει να είναι η τελευταία του ευκαιρία για να παραμείνεις την ζωή. Όπως και τις προηγούμενες φορές πάντως στο πλευρό του Μαραντόνα θα είναι η οικογένειά του.

Football team wins match by scoring against itself.



The incident took place during a final group match between Barbados and Grenada for the Shell Caribbean Cup in February 1994. The Barbados team had to win the match by at least two goals in order to face Trinidad and Tobago in the finals; anything less and Grenada advanced to the next round instead. The rules in effect at the time specified that if the score were tied at the end of regulation play, the match would continue into sudden-death overtime (not a penalty kicks round, as stated above), and the first team to score during the overtime period would be considered a two-goal winner.

As detailed above, Barbados was leading 2-0 well into the second half of play, when Grenada finally managed to score a goal in the 83rd minute to make the score 2-1. Barbados realized with three minutes to play that they were unlikely to score again in the time remaining and deliberately kicked the ball into their own goal to tie the match at 2-2 and force an overtime period. Grenada then attempted to score on their own goal to prevent the match from going into overtime, but Barbados had already started defending Grenada's goal to prevent them from succeeding. The two teams then spent the remaining few minutes with Barbados defending both ends of the field as Grenada tried to put the ball into either goal, but time expired with the score still tied. Four minutes into overtime play, Barbados scored and advanced to the finals.

'I have seen the face of Agamemnon." No, not the reaction of filmgoers after seeing Brian Cox's depiction of the Greek king in Troy, but that of the celebrated 19th century archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann after digging up a striking Bronze Age gold mask from ancient Greece.
Schliemann was not known for understatement - on excavating the ruins of Troy he said he had "opened a new world" for archaeology - but on this occasion he was wrong. The shaft graves at Mycenae where he found the mask have now been dated to 1500BC, and it would stretch even the historical flexibility of a Hollywood scriptwriter to place Agamemnon there several centuries before he led the Greeks in the Trojan war. The glittering death mask, treasure and the rest of the haul recovered from the graves were not his, but whose were they? The question has long puzzled archaeologists.

"These burials are unique in the Bronze Age," says Keri Brown of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. "These people seem to have cornered the market in gold, so how did they do this, who were they and how did they have this power?"

Working with the forensic science service, Brown and her team are turning to DNA fingerprints to solve the conundrum. Using genetic material painstakingly scraped from 3,500-year-old bones and teeth recovered from the graves, the scientists hope to establish whether the dozens of privileged individuals buried at Mycenae are part of the same family, or an unrelated collection of mercenary fighters. The answer will shine light on the social structure of one of the most influential periods in human history.

"If you like, this is where Greek history starts," says John Prag, an expert in Greek archaeology at the Manchester museum.

His group has already used facial reconstruction techniques to put flesh on the ancient bones and look for family resemblances, with some success. "We got a couple of pairs that were very clearly related but there comes a point where everybody's got two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth and we all look alike," Prag says.

Clues from the bones have also suggested the sex of those buried at Mycenae, as well as how old they were when they died. "But you can't tell from bones who is related to who," says Brown. "Only DNA can do that."

Scientists have worked out how to analyse strands of genetic material from animals and people who lived thousands of years ago. The key is being able to extract DNA from the hard structures like teeth and bones left behind after the rest of the corpse rots away. It's a tricky process, and the results are not always reliable, but researchers have used it to recover DNA from mammoths, sequence the genes of Neanderthals and confirm the identities of the Romanov family murdered during the Russian revolution.

The DNA strands are often broken or degraded (seemingly scuppering our chances of cloning a mammoth), so to analyse the Mycenae skeletons the Manchester team and the forensic scientists are searching for new types of genetic markers that are shorter than those used in conventional DNA fingerprinting. To complicate matters, Schliemann painted them with a sticky preservative that plays havoc with the sensitive chemistry used to isolate and copy the DNA molecules.

"We're spending a lot of time perfecting the experiments on other material before we tackle the Mycenae bones themselves," Brown says. "We want to get the extraction and analysis methods spot-on." The remains are carefully guarded by the National Museum in Athens; it took two years of form-filling and delicate negotiation to get the bone splinters and few odd teeth on the plane to Manchester.

Of the 19 individuals buried in the grave Brown's team are interested in, she has bone or teeth samples from 10 of them. Preliminary work suggests a 40% success rate with the DNA technique, which mean the family secrets of just four ancient Greeks will be revealed. It's not much, but it's a start.

"I'd like to go on to look at DNA from other bodies found in other parts of Greece from the same period," says Prag. "The modern Greeks would love to know they're descended from the ancient Greeks. But since 1500BC Greece has been invaded and occupied so many times I'm not sure we're going to get the answer they want."

«Απογείωση» στην άσφαλτο
Ολοκληρώθηκε στη Γαλλία το κατάστρωμα της υψηλότερης γέφυρας του κόσμου


Το τελευταίο τμήμα του καταστρώματος στην κοιλαδογέφυρα του Μιλό στη νότια Γαλλία τοποθετήθηκε στη θέση του, φέρνοντας ένα βήμα πιο κοντά στην ολοκλήρωση την υψηλότερη γέφυρα του κόσμου, με πυλώνες ψηλότερους και από τον Πύργο του Αϊφελ.

Η επιφάνεια του δρόμου, μήκους 2.460 μέτρων, βρίσκεται 270 μέτρα από το έδαφος -ρεκόρ ύψους για κατάστρωμα γέφυρας- ενώ μετά την ολοκλήρωσή της η όλη κατασκεύή θα ορθώνεται στα 343 μέτρα, 23 μέτρα ψηλότερα από τον πύργο του Αϊφελ.

Όπως αναφέρει το Γαλλικό Πρακτορείο Ειδήσεων, ο πυλώνας 2 κάτω από τη γέφυρα είναι ήδη ο μεγαλύτερος του κόσμου, με ύψος 245 μέτρα.

Η γέφυρα του Μιλό, σχεδιασμένη από τον διάσημο Βρετανό αρχιτέκτονα σερ Νόρμαν Φόστερ, κατασκευάζεται από τον όμιλο Eiffage, ο οποίος είχε αναλάβει και την ανέγερση του Πύργου του Αιφελ.

Το έργο θα παραδοθεί στην κυκλοφορία στις 17 Δεκεμβρίου, πάνω από τρεισίμισι χρόνια μετά την έναρξη των εργασιών. Η γέφυρα διέρχεται πάνω από την κοιλάδα του ποταμού Ταρν, ως τμήμα του αυτοκινητοδρόμου από το Κλερμόντ-Φεράντ έως το Μπεζιέ, συνδέοντας το Παρίσι με τη Μεσόγειο.

Η Eiffage θα καρπώνεται για 75 χρόνια το αντίτιμο των διοδίων, που καθορίστηκε για τα ΙΧ στα 4,6 ευρώ κατά τη χειμερινή περίοδο και στα 6,5 ευρώ την περίοδο υψηλής τουριστικής κίνησης.

Όταν οι εναπομείναντες πυλώνες ολοκληρωθούν πάνω από το κατάστρωμα και τοποθετηθούν στη θέση τους τα συρματόσχοινα, η κρεμαστή γέφυρα θα αποτελείται από 36.000 τόνους ατσαλιού.

Αν οι κατασκευαστές είχαν χρησιμοποιήσει μπετόν και συμβατικές μεθόδους δόμησης, η κατασκευή θα ζύγιζε τέσσερις φορές περισσότερο.

Στα υπέρ είναι ότι και οι τρεις είναι ομάδες εκτός Αθηνών και έτσι μειωθήκαν οι ομάδες της Αθήνας σε οκτώ από δέκα.

Για το άβαταρ ήθελα πάντα ένα με τον Ανρί ή μια φωτογραφία από το Ίντερνετ που έχω επιλέξει εγώ, οπότε μάλλον δεν νομίζω να γυρίσω στο Γκόλουμ... (δεν μου φέρνει εμφανισιακά, μη φοβάστε!!!) Πάντως ευχαριστώ για την απάντηση!!!!! Όσον αφορά το ότι είναι πολύ απλό, γι αυτό και είμαι λίγο διστακτικός...
